What is a Remote Mixer?

A remote mixer is an engineer that has been hired to mix your tracks that isn't in the same location as you. Communications between you and your remote mixing engineer will take place online or over the phone using either email, Zoom, Skype, etc. Tracks are shared through various file sharing sites like Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc. Working with an individual online and/or over the phone will require good communication skills. Let them know what your needs are and what exactly you're looking for. Quite a few will be able to do both mixing and mastering and may include other services on top of that. Other engineers may only offer mixing but not mastering and vice versa. Don't be afraid to ask your potential mix engineer questions. They want to provide you with not only a great mix but great service as well. Provide them with as much information as you can.

When Would I Need to Hire a Remote Mixer?

For an example, if you live in a small town or city and there just aren't any local engineers near to you or that your local engineers might be too busy to take on new work then it would be best to branch out and reach out to engineers that are outside of your area. Start by searching on the internet in neighboring towns for a mix engineer. Don't be afraid to reach out to them via email or the contact form on their site and ask questions. If you don't get an answer within a few days move on to your next engineer in your list.

Helpful Tips

  • I would highly advise against bulk emailing a whole bunch of engineers at once. Take the time to listen to their portfolio and see if they would be a good fit for your music style and genre.
  • I can't stress this one enough...ask lots of questions. Your potential mixing engineer will ask you questions as well so answer them to the best of your ability and if you don't understand something ask them.
